Stubai Glacier in Austria

I was attempting to write a blog on romantic getaways in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, but who am I kidding?  I’m living in Switzerland where no one’s heard of Valentine’s Day.   February 14 lands in the middle of ski week when all school children get a week or two off and everyone in our little town has left for the snow.  We, too, are enjoying a family ski break and are now in the beautiful Tirol mountains at the foot of the Stubai Glacier in Austria.

We are staying for a 4-night vacation at a wonderful little place called Hotel Alte Post in the town of Fulpmes, about a half hour drive from  Innsbruck and 2o minutes or so from Stubai Glacier Ski Resort.  It’s a four star hotel with a quaint and cozy vibe, a friendly and helpful staff and a delicious breakfast and 5-course meal that comes with the half board room plan. The hotel is about a 5 minute bus ride from the ski resort Schlick 2000 and about a half an hour bus ride to Stubai.  Amenities include a pool, sauna and kids play area, plus free wireless Internet in the lobby.  Prices here a little better than what we found in Switzerland for high season.  We’re paying under 950 euros for a two-room family suite for 4 nights, which includes breakfast and dinner for the four of us.

This has been a remarkable warm and sunny February and while there’s no snow around town, the Stubai Glacier Ski Resort has plenty.  I skied at Stubai yesterday with my family and it met our varied needs: an award winning ski school for my 5-year old son, nice intermediate slopes for my 7-year old son and me, and plenty of advanced runs for my expert skiing husband.

Today I took the day off to rest my legs.  From the small town of Fulpmes, I took a 1-hour scenic tram ride into Innsbruck to enjoy sightseeing and shopping, while my husband and kids hit the slopes.

This ski vacation has really exceeded my expectations, which is saying a lot, as we do live in Switzerland where we have amazing ski options.  The mountains here are awesome, the ski area is amazing, the mountain towns are quaint and lovely and all around we’re having a great vacation.  Can’t say there are any  Valentine’s Day activities going on, however.  So we’ll take a rain check on our romantic night out as we cherish our mountain family holiday in this gorgeous locale.
