Fun Cruises for Kids: Review of the Disney Magic in Europe

February 2, 2011

Shuffleboard with Goofy

Looking for a cruise that will be fun for the kids and also enjoyable for the adults?  Disney Magic will be back in the Mediterranean this summer offering families a perfect way to take in the wonders of Europe.  Whether you’re traveling with toddlers or budding teenage history buffs, Disney Cruise Line provides all the services and features required for the ideal European family vacation.

My kids were two and four-years old on our first Disney Magic Cruise in Europe.  We were amazed at all the fun things to do for families on the ship!  On our Disney Mediterranean Cruise, our four-year old fell in love with the Oceaneer’s Club at first sight and begged to spend every waking moment there.  Our 2-year old was taken care of regularly at the Flounder’s nursery, while my husband and I shared time at the adult-only restaurants and clubs.  Our family had fun together at two pools, Broadway style shows, sail away and pirate parties, a movie theater and other fun activities like learning to draw cartoon characters.

The ports of call on the Disney Mediterranean cruise were fun and easy to explore  as a family.  Since my kids were quite young, we opted for excursions that were of a more relaxed nature.  For example, we took a Disney excursion to Mondello Beach near Palermo for day of fun in the sun and some Italian gelato.  In Naples, we took a hydrofoil on our own to Capri for a ride on the funicular, a little shopping and some delicious pizza.  In Villefranche, we walked just ten minutes from the spot where we tendered to a gorgeous beach and then took a short train ride to Monte Carlo for a walk around the town.  Many of those families with older children went on more ambitious tours taking in the in the amazing historical sites, like archeological sites at Pompeii, the museums in Florence and the Vatican and other historical sites in Rome.

On this Disney Mediterranean Cruise, we stayed in an inside cabin and found it to have ample space and amenities for a comfortable 10-day stay for our family of four.  The stateroom attendant was amazing and cleaned our stateroom twice daily, treating us to towel animals and chocolates on our pillows each night before bedtime.  Dining options were ample.  Most evenings, we rotated between our assigned main dining venues, but there was a night or two when we opted for more casual dining in the buffet.  Room service was great and we took advantage of this service each morning to have a more leisurely start of the day with our young kids in our own room.  The overall condition of the ship was excellent, with a crew who worked tireless to keep things clean to a very high standard and in top condition.

The Disney Magic cruise will be sailing in the Mediterranean from May to September 2011 on 7, 10 and  11-day itineraries.   All Disney Mediterranean cruises depart from Barcelona and ports of call can include Valleta (Malta), Naples, Rome, La Speccia/Florence, Ajaccio (Corsica) and Villefranche/Nice, depending on the itinerary length.  Prices start at just $875 per person for a family of four (2 adults/2 children, ages 12 and under with a total voyage fare of $3500) for the August 27, 2011 Disney Magic  7-night Mediterranean cruise.   I highly recommend this cruise for all families looking for a fun, adventurous and easy European vacation.
